Master of the Diagram

So most of this post concerns work, as that has been pretty much the dominant thing at hand over the last week and so. Last week I was given a quasi-promotion, to “Shift Leader” of Technical Support, which roughly translates to Shift Supervisor or Team Lead depending on your outlook in life. I chose Team Lead for myself mostly because we don’t really have shifts and the Denim in me loves the word Team. At any rate, I call it a quasi-promotion because it really highlights the things I have been doing essentially to try to simplify procedures and operations in our department, things like the documentation I am writing for team members and hopefully our customers, doing the various IT-related things, such as the network diagrams I’ve been working on, and QA testing for Development for the new version, so that we in support will know what to expect when it comes out rather than guess. All this alongside getting our two newest guys up and running while one moves over to Development and one drops to a couple days a week. I’ve always liked this style of leadership role, where I can effect changes that make my job and everyone else’s job easier, but still stay within the parameters already established. One of the reasons why I enjoy this company is we ARE corporate in a sense, we make and break the rules, and we can change things to suit a new purpose at will, something I could not get from the places I worked before. I have a lot of ideas on how to make things run here, and in time, I plan to make them realized.

We got a kitten from the folks downstairs whose cat mated with another cat a few doors down. It’s a tiny ball of cute and destruction, already destroyed a couple wires, one I actually needed. I’m 60/40 on it really, I like cats and I thought about getting another cat at some point, but I was content with just Ellsbury for awhile because he was a relatively calm cat who won’t break shit and keep me up all night, something this kitten will do if I don’t keep her in the office at night, since we still don’t have a door.

In other news we are putting together the funding to obtain a decent large LCD TV and a new Wii. I already have over 50% of the money for the TV in part from my old apartment’s security deposit, just need to find a good TV. Thinking of probably either seeing what they have at BJs or Best Buy, looking for something around 40″ for 500-700 if possible, full 1080p and HDMI. The goal is to not only use it for the Wii and PS2/PS3 when I get one, but build a media PC and hook it up to the HDMI and probably chuck in a BD player and such into it so we can use it for PC media files and blu-ray and all.

I haven’t been playing much game wise, though I may get back into a little Borderlands if I end up playing with a friend who just got the game. For some reason I found myself playing The Sims 3 a few nights ago, I found I enjoy building the houses and shit, but playing the actual game seems to be a pain somewhat with all the shit you have to watch. Mods are interesting though, found one to modify breast size. With all the things you can do in this game, it makes me wonder why this isn’t a standard feature. I know this is about the same as people using the Spore creator to make dicks, but if I am going to make female sims, shit, they’re gonna have tits.

Lastly, if you missed Mario Marathon last weekend, a group of guys in Indiana spent the weekend plus a couple days playing 9 Mario games straight through plus 100% runs for Child’s Play charity. I’ve been donating to CP now for many years both to hospitals directly and through events like this and it was awesome to see these guys power through all of the major Mario games day and night and raise over 80k for charity, almost 3 times what they raised last year. While I would have enjoyed to see them make it to the final goal of 156k with all levels and 100% runs complete, they did an awesome job getting through nearly 800 levels of Mario. Hopefully next year they can get the support needed to top that number. All I know is, I so wanted to break out NSMB:Wii or SMG and play, but I lack a Wii. =(
