One of the things that bothers me about NBC in this whole Leno versus O’Brian thing is that when people say NBC is in the toilet, they’re right, and yet they’re wrong.
It’s true they don’t have any hard-hitting shows like CSI, House, Family Guy, or whatever is on the other networks, but they’ve had some pretty good programming over the past year or two that has been largely neglected simply because the network doesn’t understand how to pitch them properly, on top of recovering from the WGA strike. Shows like the new Night Rider, Chuck, and Heroes, are all great shows but either got cancelled, placed on hiatus, or were gutted and pasted back together because they are so desperate for ratings that they will destroy anything in order to get it, and that includes The Tonight Show.
I was a huge fan of David Letterman’s show as a kid, especially his Top Ten lists. Leno’s show was good, and there were some especially good moments from it, but it was never my top favorite. Conan however gained a lot of “internet cred” with his late night show due to some of the funny things he did and Triumph The Comic Insult Dog. Yet NBC has not seen fit to capitalize on any of this at all, which is funny coming from the same people who whored out Heroes to every person alive and turned it into a giant sack of shit. If Jay’s new show was that bad in ratings, either get together and make some changes, or let him go. They didn’t seem to have that problem with their other shows, so why is his so special? If they thought he was such a huge asset, they would have kept him on Tonight until he legit retired and put Conan in there.
I might also be writing this because I want the new Knight Rider back. Shit was just getting going too. =/
